Instead you can use the API
Here you can find a ready script for renaming objects after merging (see the last example script)
https://3d-kstudio.com/faq-cat/maxscript-api/#api_for_asset_manager
Save it as file with extension “ms” and place to startup scriptsOleksandr Kramer
ModeratorPosts: 259Threads: 1172Joined: Aug 2009The Project Manager is designed to maintain the original structure of objects during import, including their names. This behavior prevents changes to object names to ensure consistency across files.
However, when models containing multiple objects are imported using the drag-and-drop method, these objects are grouped together, and the group name is assigning by the file name.
This could explain why you’re seeing the previous names even after using Advanced File Renamer.Oleksandr Kramer

ModeratorPosts: 259Threads: 1172Joined: Aug 2009At first, you can try to click right-mouse button after finishing placing or press the escape key.
It looks like you don’t finish placing.Oleksandr Kramer
ModeratorPosts: 259Threads: 1172Joined: Aug 2009Try to install/reinstall the latest updates for 3Ds Max
If this won’t help generate the support request.
You can find this option in the main 3ds max menu “Project Manager” ==> Create Support Request.
Also, please send a video of the process of merging.Oleksandr Kramer
ModeratorPosts: 259Threads: 1172Joined: Aug 2009- Open a scene with xRef-files
- Select xRef file and Rename it using the menu-item “Rename Link&File”
- If the scene contains a few xRef files, you can also use Advanced Asset Rename tool
- Select xRef files
- Open Advanced Asset Rename tool using F2 or from menu Tools => Mass-Rename Tool
- Check Rename on Drive
- Print “materials.max” to Find field and “materials-2024.max” to Replace field
- Press Apply button
- Add files that contain xRef scenes
- Turn on the option “Find&Replace”
- Print “\materials.max” to Find field and “\materials-2024.max” to Replace field (I recommend to use slash before filename)
- Press START button
- Please note that this function doesn`t rename xRef files on drive, and you should do this manually
You can do this on from the next methods
1) Just rename xRef files2) Rename xRef files using Mass-Rename Tool
3) Rename using Batch Relink tool (shipped with Project Manager)

ModeratorPosts: 259Threads: 1172Joined: Aug 2009Hi
As I understand, you want to rename a material library file?September 23, 2024 at 14:10 in reply to: Batch Relink: Search Textures in Folders Matching 3Ds Max File Names #42758Oleksandr Kramer
ModeratorPosts: 259Threads: 1172Joined: Aug 2009- Add files/directories with 3ds max files
- Add directory or several to search textures
- Turn on the “Relocate Links” option (optionally – use if previously you relink textures to incorrect path)
- Open the dialog “Search Directories Filters”
- Switch to “Include” and add <filename> to the list
- Hit START button
Using the last version, you can use the option “Search Directories Filter” with filter <filename>
This allows you to search textures in directories with the same name as 3ds max file.
The advantage will be given to folders with the same name as the 3Ds Max file.Oleksandr Kramer
ModeratorPosts: 259Threads: 1172Joined: Aug 2009- Merge using double-click on 3D file
- Merge using the menu-item “Merge with default 3Ds Max Dialog” from the right-click menu “Merge”
- Hold the SHIFT key when dragging a model.
Such models should be merged using one from methods, described here
