I almost always reference models in as xref'd objects. Could you add this option, ie. "Merge as Xref Obj." on top of Merge as Proxy?
PS. I can't find the register button for the forums!

In the future it may be as combo box with Items "Merge as Proxy" and "Merge as Xref Objects"
Now you can find this ability here
