When rendering thumbnails and switching to another application (like PhotoShop or something), 3dsMax still jumps to the foreground when rendering the next thumbnail. I want 3dsMax to to keep rendering in the background without interrupting my workflow. What can I do about this? Even when disabling the frame buffers while rendering or having 3dsMax on another windows desktop does not fix this.

This issue is well known among 3ds Max users. During rendering, especially when batch processing or generating previews, 3ds Max tends to steal window focus, which disrupts parallel work in other applications.
