thx for your tip. I tried it, but the problem is that the sweep modifier does not handle self intersections when the curve becomes too tight for intersection-less sweeping. This problem arises on all sweep modifiers, also in Softimage. Seems it needs another level of logic, which has not yet been established in those modifiers.

Maybe you need contact with developer of 3ds Max and Softimage.

This is a specific of the 3ds Max modifier Sweep, developed by Autodesk.
