MultiScatter is a plug-in for 3ds max which works with V-Ray and Mental Ray.

VRaySpeedScatter

VRaySpeedScatter -  a fundamentally new type of scatter under VRay from Andrey Kozlov (Karba).
It work on the principle of 2D displace, but VRaySpeedScatter used geometry instead of the height map.
It does not require the generation of a large number of objects and not limited in size, does not consume memory, quickly rendered.
Now in development.
